- Abstract
- The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the responses of citizens that have been a victim of grievance caused by public institutions of health and justice in Mexico. Those grievances are constituted by different obstacles or forms of humiliation, which must be endured by citizens in order to access the medical care or to the resolution of a suffered crime, even though these are fundamental rights recognized by the Mexican State. This research is divided in four parts: The first part presents the definition of institutional violence and explains how it has been experienced by the citizens who participated in this research. The second part shows how individuals, after having suffered institutional violence, construct a political standpoint with respect to the grievance suffered and the concerned institutions. The third part presents the repertoire of actions that some individuals have implemented to demand their rights, taking into account their resources and capacities, as well as the obstacles that have prevented other individuals from being involved in this struggle. Finally, the fourth part examines if the struggle of individuals for their own rights have also an impact on the eradication of institutional violence at a structural level, or whether this personal struggle contributes, paradoxically, to the reproduction of this kind of violence.
