Steady-state sediment transport phenomena in a river (horizontal advection, deposition and resuspension) are diagnosed using the concept of partial age. The relevant partial ages are introduced for suspended and deposited sediment particles. They can be deduced from physical arguments alone, i.e. without explicitly solving the relevant partial age equations. In the process, a tentative explanation is provided as to why the suspended sediment age is independent of the vertical sediment flux at the bottom of the water column.
