Abstract
(en) The presence of irony in the intercalation or “sandwich” narrative of Mark 14:53-72 is a well-established aspect of Mark's storytelling style. However, the instances of irony identified in this intercalation can vary greatly from one scholar to another. This is not surprising, given how difficult it is to define irony in a way that is both simple and practical. In the context of a narratological approach to the second Gospel, one possibility is to understand irony as a narrative device by adopting the definition of dramatic irony as a working hypothesis. Based on this category of irony, we will observe how this device is used in the narrative, paying attention to how the reader's knowledge is programmed and focusing on the effect (or effects) it has on the reader.
