- This article begins with a detailed study of an exceptional inscription from Ostia featuring cultores, worshippers of the emperors’ Lares and images. On this basis, the aim is then to assess the extent to which the ‘type’ of cultores that emerges from the Ostia text can be found elsewhere. The investigation will identify the individuals or groups in Rome and the first Augustan region who are described as cultores; which deity they were cultores of; and the extent to which their devotion related to the 'imperial cult'.The places where the cultores met, the nature of the associations or groups they formed, their links with the civic sphere and their relationship with the funerary sphere will also be examined.
