Abstract
(en) This article introduces and develops the concept of data craft to qualify a set of often invisible practices that contribute to data production in the age of datafication. In contrast to the prevailing narratives around quantity and automation, data craft highlights forms of meticulous, situated, and collective work that result in high-quality, relevant data. Drawing on two ethnographic surveys, the article shows that in certain production contexts, data work is based on know-how, ethics of care, and community dynamics comparable to those found in handicrafts. This theoretical position examines the role of data artisans and explores the tensions between data proliferation, expectations of quality, and transformations related to datafication and the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Data craft thus appears as a technical, ethical, and political practice, which aims to reaffirm the fundamentally human dimension of data work.
