Abstract
(en) As the smallest federal substate entity in the European Union, the German-speaking Community of Belgium (in German, Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft Belgiens – DG) has acquired a significant autonomy throughout the different reforms of the state in the past without much tension. The most recent, sixth state reform has also considerably expanded its area of competence. This contribution illustrates the most important changes and explains how the DG handles and puts them into practice. At first, the dynamics of the sixth state reform and the position of the DG will be presented. The changes will then be clarified with regard to the representation of the German-speaking people in the Belgian federal state but also with regard to its new competences. By the means of the various peculiarities of the Belgian federal system, the German-speaking Community is today situated in-between the times of its country’s federalism, but seems still to have found a place that allows it to deal with the recent evolutions and to prepare for those to come.
