This chapter focuses on the magnitude comparison of numbers. The first part of the chapter will briefly present the effects that have been encountered in magnitude comparison tasks with adults as well as the models that have been proposed to account for these data. The second part of the chapter will review studies that have traced the development of these effects. The third part will aim at identifying the age at which number magnitude starts to be automatically activated in children. Finally, we will consider the hypothesis that developmental dyscalculia could be due to a basic dysfunction in representing number magnitude.
