Abstract
This review article, a review of a recent book on the science of ancient religion, presents an appreciation and critique of the model of lived ancient religion, and offers as a possible model that of the microhistory of ritual, with a special study of the question of how one treats cases of a divinity that appears only once in our textual record (in particular, in the Odes of Horace, and in the inscriptions of the Arval Brethren).
