Abstract
(en) The end-to-end principle is fundamental to the design of the Internet. It mandates that hosts participating in a transport connection must be able to process packets continuously. This principle conflicts with the energy-saving objectives of battery-powered wireless devices, which benefit from short, intermittent usage patterns. In this paper, we propose a QUIC delegation mechanism that enables a client to move an existing connection to a trusted third party by transferring the connection state. The third-party host assumes responsibility for the connection and data exchange on behalf of the original client, allowing the client to enter a power-saving mode. We design and implement it on two different QUIC implementations to validate its interoperability. Our evaluation shows that QUIC Connection Delegation can save up to 55 % of energy when the smartphone can leverage existing sleep mode techniques, and 25 % considering background traffic and an active display.
