Abstract
Multiple Sclerosis (MS), seen on susceptibility-based MRI as Paramagnetic Rim Lesions (PRL), are associated with increased clinical disability and tissue damage. However, advanced MRI techniques and histopathological studies reveal heterogeneity in terms of PRL-associated tissue damage. Clinically available sequences such as FLAIR or MPRAGE lack quantitative estimation of tissue integrity. Using MP2RAGE-derived T1maps and normalised MPRAGE images, we show that both can depict the increasing tissue damage associated with Rim visibility in MS lesions. Differentiation of PRL based on T1 allows clinical stratification of patients undergoing clinical progression within the next 12 months.
