- “Medieval.” Rarely is a term so misused. Everyone immediately understands what you mean when you describe a phenomenon as medieval: outdated, primitive, barbaric, degrading to humans. Because that is how the Middle Ages exist in popular imagination. A period in which everyone stinks, fear and superstition prevail, women have no say, and you hang for the smallest offense. But where do these clichés come from? Why are they so persistent? And what were those medieval conditions really like? Ten young experts from Flanders and the Netherlands introduce you—through the surprising results of recent scientific research—to real medieval people beyond the clichés. Medieval people who have far more in common with us than you would think. For in the Low Countries during the Middle Ages, just as today, the population included articulate citizens, critical minds, independent women, and worldly travelers—people who organized their world as logically and well as they could. bThose who look beyond the stereotypical ideas will discover a way of life in which “medieval” actually sounds quite familiar.
