- The pericope of “The Vine and the Branches" (John 15:1-17) has been the subject of much exegetical commentary. Since the Middle Ages, some women, who had no "official" training in theology, have also commented on this text. For our corpus we have chosen Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), Madame Guyon (1648-1717) and Adrienne von Speyr (1902-1967). The first is a Dominican laywoman, author of The Dialogue in which there is a particular reading of "The Vine and the Branches". Jeanne Marie Guyon was a promoter of the doctrine of "pure love". She is known for the “quietist controversy” which opposed her to Bossuet. Her interpretation of John 15 can be found in her voluminous "Explanations of the New Testament concerning the interior life". And the third was a collaborator of the theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, to whom she dictated numerous biblical commentaries, including four works on the Gospel of John. Does the fact that they were women influence their interpretation of the text? How do their commentaries differ from the exegetical commentaries of their time? Could their approaches renew our understanding of the pericope? Our paper will offer some answers to these questions.
