Background and aims : Scientific literature encourage to use biopsychosocial approach in the treatment of patients with musculoskeletical disorders. This approach seems indeed to be more effective than an only biological approach in the management of patients with low back pain for exemple (Kamper et al., 2014). However, there is no consensus about biopsychosocial approach in the treatment of patients with chronic temporomandibular disorders. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine if there were a superiority by using the biopsychosocial approach versus a physical, psychological or social approach in adults with chronic temporomandibular disorders. Method : By biopsychosocial approach we mean at least two of the three possible treatment in this model : biologic, psychologic or social. Only randomised controlled trials and pilot study available in full version on PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane, in english or french with PICO(S) criteria have been selected. Results : No study has been found using social intervention. 7 studies of the 11 selected have shown a superiority of a biopsychosocial approach concerning the improvement of pain, muscle performance, automedication frequency, emotional distress and subjective change. 3 studies have shown that the biopsychosocial approach is equivalent to a non biopsychosocial approach for the mandibular function, quality of life and sleep quality. Finally, biopsychosocial approach has an equivalent and sometimes superior effect concerning the improvement of range of motion. Conclusion : Biopsychosocial approach shows a superior effect in comparison to a physical or psychological approach. Thereby, biopsychosocial model should be used in adults with chronic temporomandibular disorders.
