An implicit body map invariant to postural information is needed to localise touch relative to the body. It has been argued, however, that the implicit map of fingers may reflect postural changes because knowledge of finger position is important for finely-tuned movements. To test this hypothesis, we compared the ability of 40 participants to estimate the number of fingers or toes between two tactile stimulations delivered on the hand or foot, with the digits joined or held apart. The foot was chosen for its anatomical similarity but different dexterity. Finger discrimination was associated with an underestimation bias in the joined condition, revealing a specific interaction with hand posture. Toe discrimination was not influenced by posture despite high error rate. Further experiments investigated why participants were so inaccurate and whether the acquisition of foot motor skills, as a result of upper-limb aplasia, modifies the characteristics of the map underlying toe discrimination.
