Abstract
This paper reports the effects of a learning design intervention of the discussion forums of a massive open online course (MOOC) aimed at facilitating learning of corporate social responsibility (CSR). MOOC discussion forums were re-designed on the basis of the four-component instructional design (4C/ID) model through layered design approach. We focused on the message and control layers to address the issues of low forum interactions and information overload repeatedly reported in previous studies. Results show that careful design of the control layer can help learners harness the technological affordances of the forums to minimise information overload. Similarly, designing the message layer to improve guidance and support increased the number of forum interactions and exposed learners to differing perspectives on CSR.
