Abstract
(en) Diocesan synods have become spaces for processes that usually begin with extensive consultations with Catholics in the diocese. The responses, together with the reflections of the synodal teams, are the material used in the actual synodal assemblies. According to Roman terminology this material constitutes, more or less formally, the Instrumentum laboris. However, moving from consultations to written documents is by no means obvious and poses many difficulties. By studying source material from a number of synods around the world, this article sketches out a typology. This makes it possible to draw some lessons for future diocesan synods and even for this first phase of the Roman Synod of Bishops on synodality.
