[Ionic displacements during muscular fatigue]

Abstract
Sartorius muscles of Rana temporaria were excited by isometric tetani of 80 s total duration, 100 /s alternating discharge of condenser time constant 3 ms, 18°C, in Ringer-N2 distributed as follows: a) 8 tetani of 10 s at 0.5 min intervals; b) 8 tetani of 10 s at 5 min intervals; c) 100 tetani of 0.8 s at 0.5 min intervals; d) 100 tetani of 0.8 s at 5 min intervals. The paired muscles were not stimulated and were used as controls. The force-time integral was measured. The muscles were analyzed for their contents in ions Na, K and Ca. There occurred a large fall in force-time, but no changes in the ionic distribution in cases a, b and c. In cases d, Na and Ca doubled, and K halved, but the force-integral was similar to the other cases. This seems to be related to the long duration of d, 500 min. Although action potentials are deteriorated in such fatigue conditions (Bergmans and Maréchal, 1960), muscle fatigue is not caused by changes in muscle ionic content.
