Le thé rwandais face au marché mondial: stratégie de valorisation de la qualité territoriale par l'origine géographique comme stratégie alternative. Cas du thé de Gisovu
(en) The Problematic of the study comes from the findings imposed by the world market, since 40 years ago, related to the instability and low level of prices on primary goods in developing countries in general, but in particular on the foodstuff, that is Rwanda tea as far as this study is concerned. The purpose of the thesis is to think about the possibilities for Rwanda tea to face the competition by creating an original niche market of production on the international market through the specification of its supply. Following the price high level of Gisovu tea (Southern-west of Rwanda) on the national and international market (Mombassa auction), we have then taken Gisovu tea as a case study. The data analyzed in this study were collected using field surveys, realized between 2006 and 2010 with the actors involved in tea farming at Gisovu and with Rwanda tea buyers at Mombasa bidding (Kenya). By using the Localized Agrifood System (LAS) we demonstrate that Gisovu tea is defined in a process of “non-official” labeling that makes reference to the origin of the production. Therefore, strengthening this dynamic would enable Rwanda tea to make up its production niche at the world market level through specification of its supply. A specification of supply with a thorough content of the area, “territory”, of production.
