- (en) Although it is widely admitted nowadays that there existed several European centres of Renaissance, the specific features, the lustre and the length of a “Belgian” Renaissance gave rise to passionate debates inside that young country throughout the 20th century. Three interpretations came one after another: making the period begin with the golden age of Flemish Primitives; granting to artists various degrees of affiliation with “national” tradition or rejecting them as conventional imitators of their Italian counterparts; allocating a narrower chronology to the autonomy of figurative arts in the area, while conceding an identity in its own right to creativity in the Low Countries in other domains, such as vernacular literature or polyphonic music.
