Abstract
Sartorius muscles of Rana temporaria were tetanized for one second at 0°C. in N2, either at constant length, or with a constant speed shortening during the second half of the tetanus, and frozen immediately after the last stimulus. Four-nucleotides (ATP, ADP, AMP and IMP) were determined by thin-layer chromatography of the trichloroacetic extracts followed by a spectrophotometric measurement. All muscles are poisoned for one hour at 0°C either by 0.4 mM iodoacetate (IAA), which blocks glycolysis, or by fluoro-2,4'-dinitrobenzene, 8 mM (FDNB), which blocks creatine kinase. FDNB decreases the production of maintenance heat hB, without influencing the production of labile heat hA (AUBERT, 1964), which leads to the conclusion that a hydrolysis of ATP corresponds to this labile heat hA.
