- (en) This article studies the intellectual roots of political liberalism in West Germany after 1949. Focusing on the case of constitutional law scholar Ernst‑Wolfgang Böckenförde (1930-2019), it traces how young scholars entering university during the 1950s transformed the conservative political thought transmitted by intellectual figures such as Carl Schmitt and Joachim Ritter. This transformation did not occur, as is often assumed, through a softening of the conservative positions held by the previous generation, but instead followed a specific strategy of radicalization by younger scholars vying to assert their status in the early Federal Republic.
