- (en) What is the impact of imprisonment on the paternal role? Prison cannot be and considered in isolation from the rest of society. While the paternal role is modified in prison, it is not totally conditioned by the environment in which it is expressed. While fatherhood is reshaped and acquires new characteristics under the specific conditions of imprisonment, the way in which individuals view and represent their paternity remains unchanged. Drawing upon the idea of Norbert Elias’s net (1997) we began to see paternity as a web comprising numerous interwoven threads. This web cannot be explained in terms of a single thread (the father-child relationship); it is the interlinking of all these threads (family and conjugal history, sociocultural factors, etc.) and their connections which give it meaning and definition. To address the multiple dimensions of fatherhood in prison, three levels are examined: a relational analysis of paternity in prison via actual practices; an event history approach that links the present situation of the fathers interviewed to their family history; and last, a "comprehensive" analysis of the norms governing the way men see and say their role as father. This analysis is based on repeated interviews with 70 inmates, from which we established a typology that divides fatherhood in prison into four categories: Marginal, Suspended, Broken and Resource.
