Abstract
In this study we examine the digital political discourse surrounding the terms populism(s) and populist(s) (referred to as populis*) using a dual research approach involving linguistics and communication. Our analysis focuses on Twitter accounts belonging to major Spanish political parties (PSOE, PP, UP, Cs, VOX) and their leaders in 2019. Through quantitative analysis, we identify political actors employing these terms, investigate the attribution of the "populist" label, and explore associations with other terms. Additionally, employing linguistic-discursive analysis, we delve into the contextualized uses and discursive functions of populis*. From a communicative standpoint, we scrutinize message circulation, emphasizing the tools used for dissemination and examining how Twitter's characteristics as an arena of public discussion impact the circulation of specific messages. Furthermore, we explore the source of information in selected accounts, assessing whether Twitter serves as a platform for original content creation or primarily amplifies information from other arenas.
