- Social learning environments, such as the discussion forums of massive open online courses (MOOCs), have the potential to engage learners in collaborative interactions. These interactions can be beneficial to learning because they require learners to negotiate meaning and co-construct knowledge. However, collaborative interactions in MOOC discussion forums are rare and do not usually lead to the co-construction of knowledge. This paper presents preliminary results of an intervention study in the discussion forums of a MOOC on Corporate Social Responsibility. We modified the learning design of MOOC forum discussion tasks and measured its effects on the collaborative and interactive behaviour of the learners when compared with previous editions of the course. The results of this study can help us better understand how a learning design that fosters and supports social learning can help learners overcome the challenges of engaging in forums with a massive and open nature.
