- (en) The aim of this research was to analyse the transmission process of an ancient myth in modern-day Western society, and identify the forms under which it is used in therapy. Considering after François Laplantine that mythic materials are developed in response to particular psychic needs, I decided to identify some of the functions fulfilled in our society by the Sumerian myth “The Descent of Inanna” and explore the conditions under which it may serve psychological needs. Results show the importance of the role played by therapists in providing their patients with interpretation keys enabling them to employ a particular narrative as a mirror for their personal experience. As far as this condition is met, the fact that therapists and their clients do or do not belong to a same cultural system appears to have little importance. In other words, the transformative potential of a narrative would depend mainly on how it is presented to the subject and how it is believed. Results also underline the need for symbolic resources and the role artists play in this regard.
