Abstract
Central America is a region characterized by several transboundary surface and groundwater basins. The presence of these internationally shared watersheds forces the riparian States to adapt their water management. Such a constraint can strengthen cooperation or, on the contrary, exacerbate or create conflicts. Several studies have established that the participation of women in negotiation processes leads to agreements and treaties that last longer. The active participation of women in water diplomacy is therefore critical to ensure the sustainable management of shared water resources and to ensure peace and stability in the region. However, the role of women in Central America is subject to particularly heavy patriarchal patterns. Women occupy a second place in the private and public sphere. This article presents the opportunities and challenges of gendering water diplomacy in Central America to enhance sustainable transboundary water management, peace and security in the region.
