German collocations and ‘Funktionsverbgefüge’ with a ditransitive structure constitute a major challenge for learners of German. Although they have the same abstract semantic and syntactic pattern as the corresponding non-phraseological instantiations, they are characterized by idiosyncratic specificities. In our study, we advocate a construction-based approach for the description of such collocations or Funktionsverbgefüge with a ditransitive structure. With empirical tests the study addresses the difficulties in learning ditransitive phraseologisms for Italian-speaking learners and describes a promising pedagogical methodology based on 'structural priming' and visualization.
