- Since 1999 the city of Monte Porzio Catone is engaged in the excavation of the Barco Borghese, a monumental platform traditionally considered as a basis villae. There were discovered painting fragments of high quality dated I BC-I AD that are still under study (the ‘intonachino’ has a considerable thickness). This paper discusses six groups of wall fragments with a rich decoration, rendered with miniaturist precision and meticulous attention. The decorations (columns of the central aedicula, Doric frieze and floral motifs like rosettes on a white, violet, cinabro and yellow ground) are transitional from the Second to the Third Style.
