- Abstract
- The existence of a therapeutic relationship is partly determined by the way the psychotherapist interacts with his or her client. What are the appropriate behaviors? How can they be adjusted? To answer these questions, the clinical literature can benefit from the contributions of the interpersonal paradigm which that conceptualizes interactional behaviors. Through three studies, this thesis highlights the primacy of the therapist's warmth in the emergence of the therapeutic relationship, in line with the abundant literature on this topic. Moreover, the studies show that the therapist's agency, or directivity, is positively associated with client satisfaction and therapeutic alliance. Finally, it seems that it is useful to consider the client's agentic profile, particularly at the very beginning of a therapeutic encounter. These original findings, obtained through the prospect of the interpersonal paradigm, allow to identify concrete implications for clinical practice.
