- (en) The “case discussion” is a teaching method based on discussing real-life cases that the learner has encountered. It is used in seminars for post-graduate trainees in general practice in Belgium. Aim: To analyze in a pilot project the cases brought by trainees to the seminars. Methods: 184 cases were analyzed according to the International classification for primary care [ICPC (Wonca)] and to the taxonomy of difficulties in General practice (Beaulieu et al. ). Results: Show an overrepresentation of both reasons for encounter of a psychological nature and of diagnoses of a psychological or social nature as compared to a survey of general practice clinics. Analysis shows that young doctors are mostly concerned by decisionmaking problems (e.g. when to admit to hospital? how far should one investigate?) and their own emotional experiences. Conclusion: In spite of its methodological weaknesses, the project indicates that “case discussion” is analysable. It allows the setting-up of a broarder study. This project approaches the pedagogy of the seminars by raising the question of the choice of the clinical fields to emphasize during the formation.
