- Interdisciplinarity is often singled out as a valuable characteristic of research in the social sciences in general, and in management notably. In a time of overspecialization, however, the conditions for dialogue among disciplines need to be re-explored. This article offers an illustration of how theories –which mainly originates from the sociology– can be articulated in a fruitful dialogue helping to better understand a central issue in today’s (public) management research, i.e. how institutional logics may co-exist. This article mobilizes and combines three theoretical perspectives (political, conventionalist, subjectivist) in order to understand the role of power, ethical agency and materiality in the context of institutional pluralism. Further down the line, the article paves the way for a fruitful dialogue between disciplines (management, political science, sociology): it highlights three concrete avenues for interdisciplinary enrichment, i.e. the lowest common denominator, the relation of communication, and the inspiration.
