- Abstract
- The question of the role of the body and bodily experiences in thinking has been debated for millenniums. Recently, a model in cognitive psychology, the conceptual metaphor theory, has proposed that knowledge (our concepts) is structured and understood through metaphorical mappings (conceptual metaphors) from experiential concepts. Building on this theoretical background, the present research shows in three studies that conceptualized bodily experiences such as temperature or verticality can influence the representation and the processing of facial emotions (happiness, sadness, fear or anger). Moreover, these studies reveal that interindividual differences moderate the emergence of emotional metaphorical effects. This dissertation underlines a grounded and embodied perspective of cognition, shows the existence of emotional conceptual metaphors and their effect on the processing of facial emotions, and reveals the role of interindividual differences in such effects.
