- Abstract
- The object of our thesis is on the comparison of two prominent authors, Leibniz and Plotinus, through a main question wich crop up their philosophy, i.e. the emanative causality at work in the emanative or creative process. In this work, we show how Leibniz could be influenced, in his metaphysics in general, by the thought of Plotinus, and in particular, by the notion of emanative causation in its conception of creation, which is the heart of his philosophy, notably through the "contiuous creation". What is the nature of God's creation in Leibniz and what causal model implemented to connect the various elements and moments of creation ? Our doctoral project therefore focuses on two seemingly opposite concepts that are creation and emanation, to give clear and precise definitions in the metaphysics of Leibniz, from many leibnizian occurrences and plotinian references. Thus, it seems that the leibnizan model is based on logic close to the emanation in referring to frequently the production and the divine preservation of creatures in terms of "nessary" and "coutinuous" emanation, of which the 47th paragraph of the Monadology is the most famous and explicit illustration. Here is the fix we met : how can we relate these two parallel processes but nevertheless contradictory that are creating and emanating ? Indeed, you want to put into perspective two competing systems, the one emanationist and the other creationist, oblige us to situate our thesis on two axes which are, a hand, the history of philosophy and the other hand, metaphysics. First of all, in a perspective of the history of philosophy, the direction of our research has required to consider the different sources of Leibniz, namely the knwoledge that it would be indeed plotinian doctrines. This implies, in one hand, a strictly philological approach (in the sense of a "Quellenforschung"); and on the other, it clearly returns these reflections to a searching for analogies and philosophical parallels between two designs various and nevertheless carry common aspects. Then, in a metaphysical perspective, our intention was to browse the different neo-Platonic theories and re-assess in the light of what Leibniz has reformulated in its system.
