Abstract
(fr) This volume is devoted to the first generations of female students who have taken courses at the Catholic University of Louvain from the beginning of the 1920-1921 academic year, until 1939-1940. While the Free University of Brussels admitted young girls from 1880-1881 (the Universities of Ghent and Liège followed at one year intervals each), it took 40 years to see them arrive in Leuven. This slowness is due to the attachment, in Catholic circles, to the traditional conception according to which women are above all a wife and a mother, which exempts them from an advanced intellectual training preparatory to the exercise of professions. Societal mutations related to the First World War will play a role here in the evolution of minds. The first part of the book attempts to retrace the decision-making process that led the Belgian bishops, responsible for the University, to finally consent to the feminisation of their university. The second analyzes quantitatively the first cohorts of students in different aspects: general movement of enrollments, choice of studies, geographical origins, ages at the beginning of studies, percentages of nuns and laity, family situations (orphans, widows, etc.), social origins, school paths, linguistic regimes (Flemish or French).
