Abstract
Even a text so "canonical" as Jacob's Ladder can be full of surprises for the reader just as it is for the characters in the story, God and Jacob. While the character Jacob, with his ability "to fall on his feet", is only surprised for a moment, the force of this story most of all derives from the fact that it forecasts many other surprises to come: what will be the history of God with human beings, if these ones are from the beginning so reluctant before God's favour?
