(en) The present contribution deals with Josef Ponten, a forgotten German writer temporarily befriended with Thomas Mann, who received several prizes in the Third Reich. His writings of the 1920’s reveal at the same time nationalist claims and ideas for a European project in favour of a French-German dialogue. However, from the late twenties onwards Ponten dedicates all of his work to the “Germans abroad” (Auslandsdeutsche). His novels of the series Volk auf dem Wege (1933-1942) insistently summon up explicit memories of Louis XIV’s and Napoleon’s troops invading Germany, thus reactivating the stereotype of the French as Germany’s hereditary enemy. These stereotypical images shall be analysed in the perspective of comparative imagology in order to bring to the fore their ideological contents the impact of which on the readership should not be neglected.
