Abstract
Contrary to Bacillus subtilis, no natural transformation has so far been described for bacteria of the Bacillus cereus group (B. cereus sensu lato), namely B. anthracis,B. cereus sensu stricto, B. thuringiensis and B. mycoides. Moreover, other methods (protoplast, autoplast or vegetative cell transformation) were found to be particularly difficult to apply to these bacteria (Alikhanian et al. 1981, Martin et al. 1981, Fischer et al 1984, Crawford et al. 1987, Heierson et al. 1987).
