Abstract
(en) African cities are full of spontaneous, often precarious housing slums. Access to basic social services and the spread of disease are alarming, and ecologically valuable ecosystems and riverbeds are giving way to housing. In Cameroon, since the early 2000s, Makèpè-Missokè, like other precarious neighbourhoods in Douala and Yaoundé, has been threatened with eviction, either for urban renewal or beautification purposes. Despite the harsh natural conditions, the number of households in the Makèpè-Missokè neighbourhood continues to increase over time. In view of the residents' resistance to public authority and the pressing risks of natural disasters, this study uses household surveys and qualitative ethnographic methods to examine the living conditions of households, the reasons for their settlement in this area, and their perceptions of their immediate physical environment.
