Abstract
This presentation recounts the reaction against the theory of magnificence and its impact on English architectural thinking from 1603-1660. Additionally, it aims to uncover the effects of this discourse on the way building was perceived and understood. To do so, this research works outwards from diverse textual case studies, towards their associated geographical and architectural settings. The aim of this method is to both illustrate the polemical diversity of this reaction, and to propose links between the discourse and the reception or production of architecture.
