- Since the 1980s, France and Belgium have grappled with debates over the headscarf and the integration of Islam. Laïcité and women’s emancipation have been invoked to justify bans on religious symbols. Social scientists have denounced a weaponization of these principles against Islam, but research on the relations between laïcité, gender equality, and prejudice has been limited. Our research program aims to investigate whether with antiegalitarian individuals embrace and manipulate laïcité and gender equality in response to perceived threats from Islam. We employ a multi-method approach, including experimental, correlational, and textual data. Our findings reveal differences in how laïcité is conceptualized in Belgium and France. Additionally, we identify a weaponization of the ‘anti-religious sign’ laïcité in the face of Islam. Furthermore, textual analyses show that anti-egalitarian individuals recruit gender equality to justify their rejection of Islam. Our results contribute to the understanding of these complex sociopsychological phenomena.
