Abstract
The acquisition of electroneurogram (ENG) signals is subject to electromyogram (EMG) interference, the former having an amplitude significantly lower than the latter. Tripolar electrodes and amplifiers were proposed earlier to reject the EMG that is located in the same frequency band as the useful signal. However, those architectures suffer from imbalance in the electrode and from gain mismatch in the acquisition circuits. While previous works addressed the first issue, their approaches suffer significantly from gain mismatch. This work proposes an ultra-low-power low-noise tripolar amplifier architecture featuring an inter-channel chopping technique that minimizes the effects of gain mismatch without modulating the ENG. The measurements of the prototype chip in 65-nm CMOS show that the proposed ENG amplifier achieves a 9.6-µW power consumption, a bandwidth from 0.3 to 10 kHz, and an input-referred noise of 2.03 µV RMS. Thanks to inter-channel chopping, the proposed circuits achieve a 55-dB rejection of EMG.
