- Previous studies have highlighted the consistent difficulties L1 French learners face in L2 Dutch prosody. Besides, the difference between musicians and non-musicians was found to be significant on prosody perception. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the extent to which amateur musicians outperform non-musicians in prosody production, more specifically in a prosodic focus task in L2 Dutch inspired from Rasier (2006). 18 amateur musicians and 18 non-musicians were tested on their L2 prosodic focus in 7 noun phrases (e.g., een rood vierkant ‘a red square’). Recordings from participants were evaluated by two linguists whose perception of prosodic focus was, then, compared to L1 Dutch results from Rasier (2006), which allowed to categorise productions in expected vs. less expected/unexpected accentuation patterns. Looking at both categories, results showed that amateur musicians did not significantly outperform non-musicians in the L2 prosodic focus task. This finding is discussed with respect to the relevant literature in the field.
