- (en) Scholarship has long ignored the intrinsically visual character of (violent) extremists’ actions and communications. In recent years, however, a range of visual analysis methods have emerged, building on pioneering work that theorised the visuality of violence. This chapter offers a typology, succinct presentation, and appraisal of these methods, which span from in-depth interpretations of a few images to large-scale AI-powered scans of large visual datasets. Distinguishing between human and computational methods, the chapter highlights the advantages and limitations of each method, lays bare their logics and assumptions, and advocates for a multi-methods research agenda articulating them together in a coherent and productive way.
