- This contribution examines the principal challenges currently facing the European Convention on Human Rights system on the occasion of the Convention’s 75th anniversary. It highlights the relevance, now more than ever, of the Convention as a framework for the protection of democracy, the rule of law, and human dignity in Europe. While clarifying the subsidiary role of the European Court of Human Rights in its positive dimension, it also addresses issues such as judicial independence, disinformation, and the Court’s workload. Particular attention is paid to the need to preserve public trust in the Convention system and to safeguard its effectiveness in a rapidly changing environment and turbulent times. This contribution concludes by emphasising the historical responsibility vested in the Court to protect our common heritage. The contribution has been retained in the form of an edited conference presentation in order to preserve the original structure and style of the author’s oral remarks.
