(en) A reliable transport connection has traditionally been bound to the hosts that are communicating. However, as network systems become more complex and require high availability, there is a need to migrate an established connection beyond its initial hosts. In this paper, we propose Portable QUIC State (PQS), an implementation-independent representation of a live QUIC connection, with operations to move it across devices. Our solution allows a live migration that does not require network support. We describe the information PQS carries, and we prototype it in two different stacks, quiche and aioquic. We benchmark the solution to show that state serialization is lightweight and has low overhead in the production-ready Quiche implementation. We argue that this will improve network systems by providing a new mechanism to move QUIC endpoints at per-connection granularity, without requiring network support.
