- Conference speech given at the ISPP 2026 Annual Meeting, presenting research conducted by Bouchat et al., 2025. It outlined that emotional synchrony is a better explanatory mechanism for social cohesion and well-being after costly ritual (university hazing) than cognition-based explanation (shared pathway model). Four studies were presented, based on data collection among Belgian (UCLouvain and ULB) participants of university hazing. Results were discussed in light of existing theories. Future research should integrate better control group, and also look at the individuals interrupting their hazing.
