(2026) 1st International Conference on Corpus-based Approaches to School Learner Language (CASLL 2026) — Location: University of Valencia, Spain (14.May.2026)
Right from the start, learner corpora were considered for their potential contribution to language teaching (see, e.g., Granger 1993). Although progress in this domain has been relatively slow, empirical studies and pedagogical resources have demonstrated the usefulness of learner corpora to help learners develop their language skills (see, among others, the special issues of the International Journal of Learner Corpus Research and Babylonia edited by Götz & Granger (2024) and Lichtenauer & Thomas (2024), respectively).
In this presentation, it will first be shown how learner corpora can be compiled with a view to serving pedagogical purposes. This will cover aspects such as metadata collection and corpus annotation (especially error tagging). Different types of learner corpora will be examined, including local learner corpora (with data produced by the very learners who receive learner-corpus-based instruction) and process learner corpora (made up of data such as drafts, keylog files or screencast videos representing the writing process). Their strengths in the context of education will be outlined.
The presentation will also focus on the analysis of learner corpora and on how and why the findings from learner corpus research can improve pedagogy. Different types of pedagogical applications will be dealt with, from using learner corpora as sources of errors (e.g. to create error notes or error detection exercises) to using learner corpora as realistic models for students (e.g. to illustrate translanguaging practices). We will also deal with data-driven learning, which involves the analysis of corpus data by the learners themselves. The advantages of a learner-corpus-based pedagogy will be emphasized, including the possibility of offering students a differentiated and customized type of instruction.
Through various examples and illustrations, it is hoped that this presentation will encourage researchers and teachers to compile and exploit learner corpora for pedagogical purposes and to share their teaching ideas and resources with the community.
