Abstract
Phraseology is the study of multi-word expressions (MWEs) such as collocations and lexical bundles, which play a key role in language structure, processing, and use. This entry first reviews three main approaches to studying MWEs – the traditional, frequency-based, and psycholinguistic approaches - highlighting their different scopes. Methodologically, corpus-based techniques are emphasized as essential tools for identifying phraseological patterns in language use. The entry then explores variation in MWE usage across registers, disciplines, and languages. Finally, it discusses insights from learner corpora, illustrating how proficiency and L1 background shape phraseological competence in second language acquisition.
