- L2 writing is often investigated on the basis of the product, that is, the final text as made available to the reader. This chapter shows how the technologies of keylogging and screencasting make it possible to examine writing processes, that is, anything that happens while the text is being composed, and how such information can be fruitfully used to investigate L2 writing. Three possible applications are provided as examples: the study of writing fluency, the cognitive processing of multiword units, and the use of external sources in writing. Some concrete results derived from the Process Corpus of English in Education (PROCEED) are presented. These examples serve to illustrate the affordances and possible challenges of keylogging and screencasting as techniques of investigation in L2 writing studies. Future directions for keylogging- and screencasting-based research are also suggested.
