Interoception and craving play a key role in alcohol use disorders (AUD), yet their study is limited by important methodological and conceptual shortcomings. This thesis aimed in addressing these limitations through complementary neuropsychological and neuroimaging approaches. First, we evaluated the validity of the heartbeat counting task in AUD, the gold standard measure of interoceptive accuracy in research. Second, we investigated the phenomenology of the physical dimension of craving, by developing a novel tool. Third, we explored anatomical alterations of insular subregions in AUD, through a refined parcellation. In sum, this thesis offers initial steps towards a more comprehensive understanding of craving and interoception in AUD, and discusses, in the final part of this thesis, of the implications for the orientation of future research.
